Swan Group 2

Swanley Wildlife & Nature Group (SWAN)

Swanley Town Council wanted to mark the Millennium year in a permanent way, and it was decided to create an Environmental Area for the local community to enjoy. Therefore, a parcel of land at the top of Swanley Park next to the car park was set aside in the year 2000.

Advice was sought from The Community Volunteers (TCV) and North West Kent Countryside Project about suitable wildflower plants, trees and shrubs to attract wildlife to the area.

In spring 2001 the scheme started with over 40 volunteers helping to plant 1400 wild flower plug plants and 25 trees and shrubs. Following this initial planting, volunteers formed the Swanley and District Environment Group and have continued work in the environmental area since 2001, adding new hedge areas, planting approximately 1000 trees, creating habitats including hedgerows and wildflower meadows for the area.

The group was renamed "Swanley Wildlife And Nature Group - (SWAN)" in January 2010.

Creating habitats for wildlife and for people to enjoy -

The group have a yearly itinerary and holds regular working parties through the year to further its work that encourages community engagement. Children from local schools, Cubs, Brownie and Scout groups have fun identifying trees, birds and flowers in the area and helping out.

The 3 wildflower areas in the Environment Area of Swanley Park have been particularly successful and are now well established.

The group has benefited from small community and environmental grants, and is always seeking funding to further its work to engage with the local resident population, and improve biodiversity in the in area.

Swanley Town Council supports the work of the group, and supplies labour for manual tasks that are beyond the capability of the group.

SWAN have achieved awards for its work in the community, including Swanley In Bloom and has contributed to Swanley Park securing the Green Flag and Swanley's South & South East In Bloom awards.

The year’s itinerary is available through SWAN's web site or Facebook page, and new members are welcome.

The group and helpers will be planting over 400 small trees in another area of Swanley Park in November 2018, to commemorate the 100 year anniversary of the end of WW1. It is hoped that a woodland will be established over the acre of land within 10 years, for wildlife and for people to enjoy.
